The Role: Software Engineer III – Rust + Java

We're looking for an experienced Software Engineer III with strong hands-on expertise in Rust and Java to build scalable, high-performance, and reliable backend systems that power Upstox's investing platform.

• You'll work on critical backend services, solve complex engineering challenges, and contribute to building robust and efficient systems. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working on distributed systems, performance optimization, and backend architecture.
• What You'll Own
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Rust and Java
• Build high-performance, reliable, and low-latency systems for financial applications
• Develop and optimize APIs, microservices, and distributed system components
• Write clean, maintainable, testable, and efficient code
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, production issues, and system reliability challenges
• Work with databases, messaging systems, and caching layers to build robust backend infrastructure
• Participate in system design discussions, code reviews, and architectural decisions
• Collaborate with Product, QA, DevOps, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutions
• Improve system observability, scalability, and production stability
• Take ownership of technical deliverables and contribute to engineering best practices

What We're Looking For

• 6–10 years of experience in software development and backend engineering
• Strong hands-on experience with Rust and Java
• Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design principles
• Experience building scalable backend services, APIs, and microservices
• Good understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, multithreading, and asynchronous programming
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, data modeling, and query optimization
• Familiarity with messaging systems, caching mechanisms, and performance optimization
• Experience with Git, automated testing, CI/CD, and software development best practices
• Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to independently own complex technical deliverables and collaborate effectively across teams
• Experience with Kafka or similar messaging platforms

Good to Have

• Experience in fintech, stock broking, trading, or financial services
• Exposure to high-throughput, low-latency systems and real-time data processing
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, Docker, and Kubernetes
• Understanding of order management, transaction processing, or financial market systems
• Experience with observability, monitoring, and production incident management
