Head Legal & Compliance - Mumbai

The Position

As our Head of Legal & Compliance, you will be a strategic partner to the local leadership team, helping drive business success while ensuring strong legal, compliance, data protection, and governance practices across the organization. In this role, you will manage legal activities for the Operating Unit, proactively identify and mitigate risks, and provide practical, business-focused guidance aligned with local, regional, and corporate priorities. You will also serve as the Data Protection Officer, support AI governance initiatives, and play a key role in fostering a culture of integrity and compliance.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Partner with the local leadership team, providing strategic legal and compliance guidance while contributing to broader business discussions and decisions.
• Deliver legal support across all business functions, including negotiating complex commercial agreements and managing disputes, litigation, and other legal matters.
• Collaborate with regional and corporate Legal & Compliance teams to support centrally managed initiatives, including sourcing support, intellectual property matters, and other strategic priorities.
• Lead Legal & Compliance projects within the Operating Unit and actively contribute to regional initiatives across IMETA.
• Manage relationships with external legal counsel to ensure effective and efficient legal support.
• Support the development and implementation of governance frameworks, policies, and standard operating procedures that meet local regulatory requirements and regional standards.
• Monitor emerging legal, regulatory, compliance, and business developments to identify potential risks and opportunities.
• Serve as the Data Protection Officer, partnering with the Regional DPO to ensure the successful implementation of data privacy and protection programs.
• Champion the Compliance & Integrity program by identifying emerging compliance risks, providing local expertise, and helping ensure compliance initiatives reflect country-specific legal and cultural requirements.
• Represent Compliance & Integrity in local leadership forums and encourage a strong culture of ethics, transparency, and accountability.
• Support the early identification, reporting, and escalation of compliance concerns to help mitigate risk.
• Represent Boehringer in relevant industry associations, working groups, and external engagements.
• Lead local data protection and AI governance responsibilities, including regulatory registrations and alignment with regional governance frameworks, processes, and requirements.

• Education : Degree-level education in law; LLM preferred; bar admission (qualified lawyer).
